Character of Shino Ware
Shino ware is a traditional Japanese ceramic known for its distinctive features, including a rich, creamy white feldspar glaze that sometimes has a pink tint. The glaze often showcases intricate plant and natural designs drawn with iron glazes. Produced in various kilns in southern Japan, such as Okaya, Onada, Gotomachi, and Kujiri in northwestern Toki, each kiln has its own unique style, varying in shapes, sizes, and designs.
A hallmark of Shino ware is its fine white clay covered with a thick feldspar glaze, creating a smooth and lustrous surface that highlights the intricate designs. Shino ware comes in several colors, including white, red, rose, neriagede (a mix of colors), and gray. The warm gray variety is achieved by coating with iron slip, scratching in designs, applying a feldspar glaze, and firing in reducing flames. Known for its aesthetic appeal, durability, and resistance to cracking and chipping, Shino ware is a popular choice for tea ceremonies and traditional Japanese rituals.
